April 27, 2005
TOPIC: Lebanon, Egypt, and Syria – the latest.
GUESTS: David Barsamian, host of Alternative Radio
Russian president Vladimir Putin announced earlier today he will host a middle east peace summit in Moscow, as well as a summit of the four powerful political blocks known as the Quartet: the US, Russia, the European Union, and the United Nations. Putin met with Egyptian president Hosni Mubarek today, but in an interview broadcast last night Mubarek said he was still unsure if he will run for a fifth 6 year term. Mubarak surprised the world when he decided, under pressure, to allow multiple candidates in Egypt’s next presidential election. Also yesterday, the last Syrian troops left Lebanon, fulfilling part of a UN security Council resolution. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said that Syria has not fully complied with the resolution, because Syrian intelligence is still fully operational within Lebanon. The anti-Syrian Lebanese whose protests helped to pressure Syria into leaving, decided not to hold rallies after the final withdrawal in order to avoid antagonizing Syria who can still influence Lebanese politics. Back in Washington DC, the Bush administration which claims that the Syrian pullout and the elections in Egypt are a result of the invasion of Iraq, announced through Chief US weapons inspector Charles Duelfer that there is no evidence that Iraqi weapons of mass destruction went to Syria. Sonali Kolhatkar had a chance to speak with David Barsamian last week in Colorado about his trip to Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt. David Barsamian is host of Alternative Radio.
