GUEST: Alfred McCoy, author of The Politics of Heroin.
Originally published in 1972, The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade was the first book to expose the CIA and US government's involvement in global drug trafficking. From Afghanistan, to Colombia, South East Asia, and Central America, Alfred McCoy lays bare the dirty dealings of the US government, and the consequences of the War on Drugs, on the people of those countries, as well as on Americans here at home. Today we have a conversation with Al McCoy about his revised edition of the historic expose, "The Politics of Heroin".
TOPIC: Cuban Story
GUEST: Kira Phalen, daughter of Victor Pahlen, one of the film maker.
July 26th of this year is the 50th anniversary of the "Moncada assault," in Cuba, an event recognized as the opening shot of the revolutionary struggle against the Cuban dictatorship of Batista. The fall of Batista culminated in January 1959 with the Cuban Revolution, and the rise to power of Fidel Castro. An unlikely pair of American film makers were witness to the Revolution in 1959. Director Victor Phalen together with actor Errol Flynn, captured unprecedented scenes of the revolution to make one of the first documentaries about this historic event. The documentary was called Cuban Story and, it portrayed the revolution and Castro in a highly favorable light.
The documentary will air, with the gracious permission of Kyra Phalen, this evening, July 15th at 7:30 pm, at Casa Del Pueblo, 1498 Sunset Blvd.
After the revolution, this film was screened at the Moscow Film Festival, it's one and only screening. The documentary was never released in the United States and gathered dust for more than 40 years until it was just released after being newly transferred from the archival 35mm masters. The sounds from this documentary do not do justice to the incredible images. The event is being sponsored by the LA Coalition in Solidarity with Cuba.
